Beverly shores, West Beach (Portage), Indiana Dunes State Park. They're all next to steel mills, but I enjoy all those beaches. Beverly Shores is probably my favorite in this immediate area though. Parking is still free AFAIK. Indiana Dunes State Park has some nice trails and a fun one that makes you summit 3 of the tallest dunes. Beach is nice.
